Trapped Woman requires extrication by Mattydale and North Syracuse Fire Departments
Thu. Feb 12th 2009

The North Syracuse FD was dispatched to SB I 81 at Taft Rd for a Signal 80, Car vs Tractor Trailer with possible entrapment.  Initial information placed the MVC at Taft Rd, subsequent information placed it anywhere between Taft Rd and Mattydale.

With a full crew in quarters, Mattydale Engine 1(Capt. Dwyer) went enroute to the call due to the severity that was relayed at dispatch.  While proceeding to the call it was noted that this accident would be on top of the Northern Lights Bridge in our fire district.  Engine 1 was the first arriving unit and began to stabilize the vehicle and assess patient injuries.  Capt Dwyer relayed to North Syracuse R7 that extrication was needed and ensured that a handline was pulled.  The only patient was a 20's female driver with obvious facial injuries.  This patient was conscious and breathing throughout the incident.

Mattydale Car 1(Chief Wright) arrived and assumed command.  Mattydale E1 & R1 and North Syracuse R7 & E4 all worked together to remove the roof, doors, and steering wheel from the vehicle.  EMT's from both fire departments then trauma rolled the patient onto a backboard and turned her over to NAVAC ambulance for transport to University Hospital, our regional level 1 trauma center.
